Words to Live by in 2012

This year hasn't exactly been the easiest to get through. I am grateful that my family and friends are all healthy and happy (for the most part). We have carried each other through some dark times, and we, ourselves, have been lifted by the wonderful generosity of loved ones.

That said, this year has been missing something... my dad. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve - the day he died last year. I am not looking forward to tomorrow. My brain is already replaying the images of that morning. It feels like my heart is about to break open yet again. I can't even write this without crying. Has it really been a year? It's still such a fresh pain.

One of my teammates on the Rochester NY Etsy Street Team created this Etsy Treasury. These words are always good to be reminded of on any day. At this time of year they almost become sacred instructions. As another year passes hold tight to each other. Hold tight to yourself. Love. Be loved. Do what you love. 

I had a unique chance to love my father well before he left us. I take this Treasury's words of advice for 2012 quite seriously. It's not the stuff we leave behind that matters. It's our actions that live on. Be bold. Stand tall. Smile. Create. Relax. Grow.

All of these creepy critters and delightful handmade pieces are made locally by Rochester, NY artisans from the Rochester NY Etsy Street Team (RNEST). I will add that they are all delightful people, too! I am having a great time being on this team. It's really fun to get together in person with other Etsy sellers and talk shop.

Birds and Bees

I am thrilled to be in this beautiful Etsy Treasury curated by Honey From the Bee! It features members of the Etsy Twitter Team.

That's my "Home Sweet Home" Domino Pendant in the second row, second from the left. That design is made from a larger image I created specifically for my domino pendants.

The original artwork is about 6" by 3" - roughly the dimensions of a domino just bigger. I collaged the house and stitched around the edges of it with red thread. Then I adhered the bird and nest to it. I scanned this larger work into my computer and shrunk it down to domino size. I printed "home sweet home" in a really tiny letters and backed the words with red cardstock to add more dimension.

This domino pendant is one of my favorite designs! I have a thing for birds and houses lately.

Local Treasures From Rochester, NY

We have an amazing amount of art and culture in Rochester, NY for the size city we are. There is always something going on in the arts to go check out. We have world class museums and art galleries. We even have a Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA)! A lot of galleries, artists’ studios, and cool little shops are part of the NOTA.

Because our city is so generous to the arts community we have a treasure trove of local talent to show off. I belong to the Rochester NY Etsy Street Team (RNEST). We are a group of local sellers from Etsy coming together to network and promote. RNEST has some amazing members. I made a Treasury to show you some of the handmade goodness!

Facebook Fans On Etsy Street Team

I recently teamed up with the founders of the Facebook Fans on Etsy Street Team. It started as a group on Facebook and then grew to becoming an Etsy Street Team. An Etsy Street Team is a group of Etsy sellers coming together for a common purpose such as sharing our love for Facebook and Etsy combined.

The founders are Lucky Lady Bug Designs, Ripper Arts Studio & Gallery; Miss Moose Designs; In My Head Studios; AmieVoltaire; Buddha Kitty Glass; 3am Art Productions; Cheryl's Purple Cow.

I’m really excited to be a part of another team like this. I’m lending my “expertise” gained from running the Etsy Twitter Team. So far we have a blog, a site for our shops, a site on Ning, a flickr group, and the original group on Facebook.

The founding ladies are all very welcoming and knowledgeable. I think starting a team with several people in leadership roles is a great way to do it. The Etsy Twitter Team started with just two people and it has been hard to get others to sign on for more work.

So keep your eyes peeled for our big flashy first promotion. I’m not sure when it is yet. I will keep you posted! For now please enjoy (and click and comment on) this Etsy Treasury created by our main founder, Gloria Bray!

Robot Army in My Garage - I Wish!

I don't normally blog Etsy Treasuries that I didn't create or that I'm not in. Once in a while, one comes along that strikes my fancy, and this one did just that. One of my Twitter friends made it.

I adore assembled robots made from junky and/or antique parts!! My normal practice is to say, “Oooh! Nice Treasury!” and maybe click on a few items. But not this one. I savored each of these listings to their full degree. I hearted some shops and items. Unfortunately, most of these are too expensive for my art-buying budget. So I can only hope I’ll win the lottery and can buy all of them someday!

My secret dream is to have a studio in the garage where I can do this kind of work. I’ll go to every garage sale and flea market I can find and hoard old bits of kitchen gadgets, tins, and hardware. Then, back at my secret lab, I will gather my finds, produce little bits of robot love, sprinkle in a good measure of Artificial Intelligence, and voilá! A small army of awesome robots to defend my hardware stash from my hunny throwing it all out because, as he says, “We don’t need any more of this junk!” Mwwuuuhahahhahaha!! It’s the perfect plan! Next stop: Global Etsy domination!

Father's Day Card In My Etsy Shop!

Crown your dad king with this cool handmade card. I stamped “Happy Father’s Day” into copper sheeting for a neat touch. It’s affixed with metal brads. The background is stamped with an intricate blueprint for an iconic column. Seriously masculine card for your father with a bit of a whimsical touch. Let him know how much you care with a handmade card!
